This procedure involves the removal of a herniated disc (or a fragment of a herniated disc) to relieve pressure on the nerve. Though typically done as an "open diskectomy," the minimally invasive techniques available at Orange Regional allow our surgeons to perform microdiskectomies utilizing special retractors, instruments and an operating microscope. This allows for a much smaller incision, less trauma to surrounding tissues and less disruption to the normal anatomy of the spine. The net result for you is a faster recovery, a shorter hospital stay (sometimes an overnight stay is not even required), and a quicker return to work and leisure activities.

A spine fusion is performed to link together two or more vertebrae – restricting the motion in that portion of the spine in an effort to eliminate the source of back problems. If a patient requires greater stability in a segment of the spine, then fusion in both the front and back of the spine may be recommended.

Used to treat vertebral fractures resulting from osteoporosis, cancer or multiple myeloma, kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure available at Orange Regional that uses an inflatable bone tamp to reduce these fractures and help them heal. The procedure utilizes a special balloon, which is inserted and gently inflated inside the fractured vertebrae to restore height to the bone. Then, a special cement-like material is injected to help reduce deformity of the spine.

Performed as an outpatient service, kyphoplasty generally offers immediate pain relief and stabilization of the spine.

This procedure involves removing arthritic bone spurs and other material in an effort to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve – usually to address symptoms of spinal stenosis. While a traditional laminectomy often requires a 6-inch incision, the minimally invasive techniques available at Orange Regional can often allow the same procedure to be performed through a much smaller incision using a tubular retractor, allowing for quicker recoveries and fewer complications.

This procedure offers an alternative to spinal fusion – utilizing flexibile materials to help stabilize the spine while still retaining some natural motion. External spacers are used to stabilize the joints and eliminate pain while a flexible implanted device permits careful controlled movement. Once the devices are attached bilaterally, the dynamic push-pull relationship between spacer and cord stabilizes the joints, keeping the vertebrae in a more natural position.

Interspinous spacer devices allow for minimally invasive treatment of spinal stenosis, as well as several other common spinal disorders. Commonly known by their trade names (X-Stop or Lanx Aspen), these implants often allow for a shorter operation (with shorter duration of general anesthesia) than conventional techniques. They work by keeping the stenotic segment in a flexed position, which allows the underlying nerve roots to be decompressed.

This procedure is typically used to treat ankles that have been severely damaged by injury or some form of arthritis. In this surgery, both sides of the ankle are removed and replaced with specially designed medical-grade plastic, titanium and cobalt chromium alloy parts. While pain relief is the chief benefit to ankle replacement, many patients see marked improvement in both movement and coordination.

Encompassing both non-surgical and surgical treatment, sports medicine treats a variety of injuries resulting from both overuse syndromes and acute trauma – typically focused around the knee and shoulder joint (although injuries in the elbow, ankle, hip and spine are also common). The most common shoulder surgeries involve repairing the rotator cuff cartilage, stabilizing dislocated shoulders, and repairing a torn labrum, or cartiliage tear in the shoulder. Common knee surgeries include reconstruction of ligaments. Surgery is largely performed arthroscopically or through a series of small holes around the joint, eliminating the need for large incisions. This encourages a less painful and more speedy recovery.

If you and your doctor decide that surgery is the best option, a pre-surgical medical evaluation will be scheduled. During this appointment, a registered nurse will perform a medical assessment and interview to determine what tests are required prior to surgery, obtain your medical history and prepare you for your surgery. This enables your doctor to have a better understanding of your current medical condition, catch any potential risk factors and avoid possible delays on the day of your surgery. You will also be given instructions and information for the day of your surgery and have the opportunity to ask and address any questions or concerns.
